Title of Activity: Stop Motion Movie of “Because of Winn Dixie”

Age/Grade: 2nd Grade

Subject: ELA

Standard(s): 3.1 Explore multiple texts to write narratives that recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events; include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings; use temporal words to signal event order; and provide a sense of closure.

Developmental Domain: Social

Type of Lesson/ Activity: Small Group

Objective(s): The children will… make and share a stop motion movie of “Because of Winn Dixie” on our class website. This movie will include at least 3-5 key elements from the book.

Materials Needed:

• Construction Paper
• Markers
• Crayons
• Scissors
• Ipads with “Stop Motion Studio” app on it

Introductory Activity:

As a class, we will gather on the carpet in front of the white board and watch various examples of stop motion movies to give the students ideas. We will also discuss important key points in the book to be sure they are included in the students’ stop motion movie.

Procedures: (do not describe the intro activity again)

1. After the students watch examples, they will split into groups.
2. Once the children get in their groups, they will start brainstorming ideas for how they want to film their own “Because of Winn Dixie”
3. When they are done brainstorming, they will get the art supplies they need to make their vision come to life.
4. When they are done illustrating, they will get an ipad and begin filming.
5. When they are done filming, they will upload their video to the class website.
6. After everyone is done, we will go back to the carpet so we can watch the videos.

*While the children are working in their small groups on their project, the teacher should be walking around to assist the students as needed.

Assessment of Children’s Learning:

1. The teacher will be observing to be sure that children are working collaboratively in their groups to make their stop motion movie.
2. To assess the ELA part of the assignment, the teacher will make sure that their movie includes at least 3-5 key points from the book in their movie.
